Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) has handed over the first rake of the Rail Grinding Machine (RGM96) built in India to LORAM Maintenance of the US. This is the first time the RGM96 is being manufactured outside of the US and produced at BEML’s manufacturing facility in KGF Rail Coach Unit II. The machine is likely to be shortly commissioned into service with the Indian Railways.
The self-propelled RGM96 is meant for grinding the Rails in corrective and preventive modes to improve the worn-out profile of the rail head and to remove fatigue material which has micro-cracks and other surface defects. The eight Car Rake consists of one Front Control Car, four Grind Cars, one Water Wagon & two camp coaches.
The self-propelled RGM96 can operate at 100 kmph during hauling and 22 kmph during Grinding operations. It will help the Indian Railways increase the life of railway tracks by a minimum of 25%, BEML said in a release.
The Indian Railway Board has placed orders with LORAM for 10 RGM 96 Rakes. These are being produced under license from LORAM in India, for which BEML is the local manufacturing partner.
Operating in the Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction and Rail & Metro verticals, BEML has manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru, Mysore, Kolar Gold Fields and Palakkad.
